Ask Bob

Hi Bob,

Our forklift needs new tires and my company was thinking of switching from foam filled tires to air filled tires. I was wondering if this might affect the machine’s stability?

Thanks, George.

Hi George,

Great question! Before switching from foam filled tires to air filled tires, you should double check the machine’s serial number to with the manufacturer and ask if it was originally delivered with foam filled tires. If the forklift was received with foam filled tires then you will need the manufacturer’s approval to make the changes as switching to air may present stability issues serious enough for them to disallow the change.

Thanks, Bob.

An IVES Icon Passes

In February of this year, Ron Elliott, a man who was instrumental in establishing IVES as a credible entity in the mobile equipment training arena passed away from health problems he had been battling for several years.

Although Ron retired in 2001, his name is still well known and revered among many of our trainers and especially with present and past IVES staff.

Ron started with IVES back in the early 1980’s as the first staff trainer outside of the company’s founder, Colin Ives. His contribution to the design, development and implementation of all IVES training programs and materials is immeasurable and the mentorship he imparted to staff trainers over his 20-year tenure is still ingrained within IVES’ staff members to this day as many of them trained under Ron when they started.

The passing of Elliott represents a dark period in IVES’ history, but as individuals we are better for having known him. He will be dearly missed.

Incident Report

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is looking into a construction accident that killed an Indianapolis worker.

Ronald Davenport climbed the ladder of a skid loader in the parking lot of the Lafayette Landings Apartments on the northwest side Monday.

The worker driving the skid steer loader didn’t know Davenport was on the equipment when he lowered the arms, crushing him.

Davenport was transported to Wishard Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

OSHA Issues Serious Citation

OSHA cites a metal forgings plant in Chicago for 26 violations, totaling more than $352,000 in proposed fines. Willful violations involve failure to ensure that open pits are guarded by standard railings to protect employees from falling in, and failing to correct deficiencies identified by crane inspections.

One repeat violation was for failure to ensure that each powered industrial truck operator was competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely, as demonstrated by the successful completion of the training and evaluation specified in 29 CFR 1910.178(l)(1)(i).

Due to the willful and repeat violations and the nature of the hazards, OSHA has placed the company in the agency’s Severe Violator Enforcement Program, which mandates targeted follow-up inspections to ensure compliance with the law.
